29 years old Wayne Rooney wants to captain his Manchester United team mates in the coming season under new boss Louis Van Gaal. The England international hopes that the coach would find him worthy for the position in his new leadership but he, however, would not find anything wrong if the Dutch coach makes his compatriot Robin Van Persie captain over him.
Appointing a captain for his newly 'revamping' Manchester side is a task the Dutch might first have to accomplish in order to ensure coherence in the team. Van Gaal appointed Robin Van Persie captain of the Netherland team last year and he might likely do so with the former Arsenal striker whom he described as a ''fantastic'' leader.

Rooney who has been in the club for 10 years is the preferred choice of the many Man Utd fans who would rather see their Liverpool born England international wear the armband than any other at the club. Nemanja Vidic was captain of the side until the Man Utd for Inter Milan at the close of the season while his assistant Patrice Evra looks set to depart when his contract expires with the team.

Speaking to the British media, Rooney said: '' I am interested in the captaincy, I've captained United a few toimes and to get it on a full-time basis would be great.'' The England could have been made captain headlong if David Moyes had remained as the coach of the team.

Rooney would not hold anything against Van Gaal if he makes his Holland skipper Van Persie who has been at the club for just two years captain over him. He thinks whatever the coach decides, that it would in the best interest of the team.

"I feel I am ready for the captaincy, but it's the manager's decision. If he chooses someone else, then honestly I've got no problems with that. I will respect his decision. Robin is captain of his country, he has captained Arsenal and if Robin gets the nod to be captain, then I'm sure he'll do a great job." Rooney added.

Marred by injury last season, Rooney turned out to impress in any of the games he featured, churning better than average performances, scoring 19 goals which help the club to the seventh position in the Premier League log. However, the players feels pressured with coming of the new coach, especially since Van Gaal had been cleared with a transfer fund of over £150million to revamp the team and the Dutchman has gone in determined to the market to get the best legs for the coming season. He has already targeted Toni Kroos of Germany.

''"When a new manager comes in, you always feel you have to prove yourself over again. You don't know what ideas he has got or how he wants to play. I have not met him yet.

"So when we've finished the World Cup and when we go back into training, it will be like a new start and you've got to prove yourself again to make sure the manager picks you."
