2 high level security officials have confirmed the take over of restless Gwoza town in Borno state by the dreaded Boko Haram Islamists.

The source said the members of the sect raided Gwoza in the early hours of yesterday killing at least 100 people before taking over the entire town.

A resident of Gwoza told Sahara Reporters that the attack began early at dawn, with Boko Haram easily taking over the town by late Wednesday morning.

“The soldiers guarding us just went away as the militants advanced against our town,” a resident of the besieged town said in Kanuri. He added that the terrorists killed innocent Nigerians with impunity, adding that the casualties included the elderly, women, and children…

“If this continues, then all of us will soon be without a place to call home,” said the resident of Gwoza, adding that he and most residents who escaped the militants’ attack were now refugees.

The security officials said the soldiers ran away from the town after they were alerted of the presence of the heavily armed terrorists.

Those who survived the attack have fled to Chad for safety.
